Partnerships for Water

Wednesday’s Thematic Dialogue on Urban Services, was chaired by the H.E. Dr. John W. Ashe, chair of 13th session on the Commission on Sustainable Development (CSD) and dealt with the myriad challenges facing water and sanitation access among the world’s poor. In the words of Dr. Ashe, the Dialogue and subsequent events would all make important contributions to the policy session of CSD next year.
Sachs Calls for Innovative Solutions to Stemming the Growth of Slums

The Special Advisor to the Secretary-General of the United Nations on the Millennium Development Goals today called for practical, innovative solutions to stemming the growth of slums. Professor Jeffrey Sachs told participants at the Second World Urban Forum that slum-upgrading projects must work at scale and not simply at the pilot project level if they are to be effective in meeting Millennium Development Goal 7, Target 11, which aims to improve the lives of at least 100 million slum dwellers by the year 2020.
UN-HABITAT Report Celebrates Multicultural Cities

A UN-HABITAT report launched today lauds multiculturalism as an urban phenomenon that should be celebrated, not feared. The State of the World's Cities Report 2004/2005 maintains that multiculturalism enhances the fabric of societies and brings colour and vibrancy to every city it touches.
World leaders, mayors warn of urbanization crisis

The former Soviet leader, Mr. Mikhail Gorbachev, Chairman of Green Cross International and Mrs. Anna Tibaijuka, Under-Secretary General of the United Nations and Executive Director of UN-HABITAT on Monday signed a Cooperation Agreement aimed at achieving a global breakthrough for the realization of the Millennium Development Goals for water and sanitation.
Special award for Lebanese Prime Minister

Prime Minister Rafic Hariri of Lebanon has been bestowed the prestigious Special Citation of the UN-HABITAT Scroll of Honor Award, 2004, for his outstanding and visionary leadership in the post-conflict reconstruction of Lebanon – the highest award given by the United Nations for achievements in the field of human settlements.
Africa accounts for 60% of world's slum dwellers

About 60 per cent of the estimated one billion slum dwellers worldwide are in Africa, Kenyan Lands and Housing Minister Amos Kimunya said in Nairobi Thursday.
King Juan Carlos inaugurates Universal Forum of Cultures
