The Challenge of Slums – UN-Habitat's new Global Report on Human Settlements

The world’s slums are growing, and growing, with the number people living in such dire conditions now at the 1 billion mark – making up 32 per cent of the global urban population, according to UN-HABITAT’s new Global Report on Human Settlements 2003. The report published this month entitled, The Challenge of Slums, says the crisis is such that the world will see this figure double in the next 30 years unless a concerted effort is undertaken to alleviate the situation.

New research by UN-HABITAT's Global Urban Observatory (GUO) shows that slums are increasing in cities around the world, especially in Asia, Africa, Latin America where insecurity of tenure is dramatically higher compared to wealthy nations in Europe and North America.

Fukuoka, 11 Feb 03
A team of 23 experts are currently visiting some 1,000 municipal offices and schools in Japan’s Fukuoka Prefecture to raise UN-HABITAT’s profile and explain its activities in the region. The promotional campaign, which started December 10 is scheduled to run through March 2003 with a series of lectures and exhibitions. The campaign is one of a number of core activities spearheaded by the agency’s Fukuoka regional headquarters for Asia.
