Urban Mobility Through Effective Public Mass Transport

Under the theme of "urban mobility through effective public mass transport", members will be invited to present their experiences and strategies for public and mass transport systems in their cities and urban regions and make recommendations to the United Nations. In the afternoon, there will be discussion of membership of the United Nations Advisory Committee of Local Authorities, the work programme for 2012–2013, resource mobilization and other matters.

Participants will include members and alternates (city mayors) of the United Nations Advisory Committee of Local Authorities, observers (United Cities and Local Governments regional chapters and national associations of local governments) and resource persons.

African Parliamentarian Conference

Global Parliamentarians on Habitat and UN-Habitat are jointly organizing a regional conference of the African Council of Global Parliamentarians on Habitat on Sustainable Urban Development. The main objective of the conference is to bring together African parliamentarians to network and share best practices and lessons learned in respect of legislation and policies addressing the rapid urbanization of African countries, particularly with regard to pro-poor housing policies that bridge the urban divide. The election of the Board of Directors of the African Council of Global Parliamentarians on Habitat is scheduled to take place during the conference.

Human Settlements and Crisis: Lessons Learned from Urban Disasters

UN-Habitat and partners will share experiences and lessons learned from past emergencies including in Afghanistan, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Haiti, Lebanon, Myanmar and Pakistan. Participants will include ministers and senior government representatives from countries in which UN-Habitat and its partners have been actively engaged in post-crisis recovery activities. The discussion will also touch on new developments at the global level, such as the growing international recognition of the need to develop new tools and approaches to address urban vulnerability and crisis.

Not about us without us: Global Land Tool Network's work on grassroots participation in land-related processes

The involvement of community groups (grass-roots) is critical at all stages of land-related processes. Many pro-poor land policies, however, are developed and implemented with weak grass-roots
participation, leading to project failure or outcomes that do not assist people living in poverty, particularly women. Through Global Land Tool Network (GLTN) partners, UN-Habitat is working with local organizations to support community-led initiatives by building community capacity to engage in land administration and land management and finding ways to scale up and reach out to more people. This side-event will showcase continuing initiatives from the perspective of both grass-roots organizations and Governments.

Commonwealth Consultative Group on Human Settlements ministerial meeting

Ministers will consider pragmatic approaches to delivering secure tenure for slum-dwellers and others in informal settlements in the urban areas of Commonwealth countries. It is hoped that the
meeting will spark a lively debate between ministers and Habitat partners on priority actions needed to attain the Commonwealth goal on secure tenure. The discussion will also contribute to the theme of the twenty-third session of the Governing Council, which includes a debate on equitable access to land.

Urban Gateway

This session will introduce the Urban Gateway, a global online knowledge exchange platform that uses social media technology to promote local and global knowledge exchange on urban issues. The Gateway allows networking, collaboration, online debate and the exchange of best practices, case studies, research and other knowledge between all Habitat Agenda partners. It supports a number of important partnership networks, including the Sustainable Urban Development Network, the Cities and Climate Change Initiative, the Habitat Partners Universities Initiative and the Cities in Crisis and Civil Society networks. The Gateway also maintains the momentum of the World Urban Forum and provides a lobbying platform for the World Urban Campaign. The initiative is supported by Sweden.

Sustainable Urban Development Through the Participatory Slum Upgrading Programme in African, Caribbean and Pacific countries

This event invites participating countries to share their experiences and lessons learned in the implementation of the Participatory Slum Upgrading Programme. The side event is an effort of the
Secretariat of the African, Caribbean and Pacific (ACP) Group of States, the European Commission and UN-Habitat to advocate slum prevention and upgrading. Supported by the ACP Secretariat and funded by the European Commission through the ninth European Development Fund and other sources, it is being implemented by UN-Habitat in 66 cities in 30 countries. The Programme is making progress in addressing urban poverty in a participatory and holistic manner.

The Huairou Commission and UN-Habitat have jointly stablished an online portal entitled Women and Human Settlements: A Global Exchange Space to promote information and knowledge sharing on human settlements, gender equality and women's empowerment. During this event, the main features of the portal will be described and the Huairou Commission will share its experience in bridging the digital divide.

Cocktail and side event on renewing the African Ministerial Conference on Housing and Urban Development commitment to implementing the Bamako Declaration and Action Plan

The Third African Ministerial Conference on Housing and Urban Development successfully concluded in Bamako in November 2010. In their final declaration, participants committed themselves to intensifying national and regional consultations and preparing common positions for the UN-Habitat Governing Council and agreed to take stock of the implementation of the Bamako Action Plan. This side event will feature a discussion of work done to date and the formulation of plans to implement the Bamako Action Plan fully and to create favourable conditions for the fourth
African Ministerial Conference on Housing and Urban Development, to be held in Nairobi in 2012.

Safer Public Spaces for Women and Girls

Women in Cities International (WICI), UN-Habitat's Safer Cities Programme, UN-Women and the Huairou Commission will host this round-table discussion that positions women's safety in the
context of planning, public space and transit management. Planners, representatives from police bodies, grass-roots leaders from the Huairou Commission Network and representatives from WICI, UN-Women and UN-Habitat will speak about successful interventions to create safe spaces for women and their contributions to sustainable urbanization.

Land, Property and Housing: A Focus On the Muslim World

In most Muslim countries, Islamic law, principles and practices make an important contribution to shaping access to land. At this side event, the Global Land Tool Network (GLTN) will launch a
training package under the title "A Training Course on Land, Property and Housing Rights in the Muslim World", together with a booklet summarizing key concepts of the course. The principal
author of the training package will present the main topics and potential users in the field will describe how the course can be applied.

Sustainable Urban Development

The Huairou Commission, as a partner to the UN-Habitat World Urban Campaign, has been promoting grass-roots women's leadership as a strategy for achieving sustainable urbanization. In
March 2011, the Commission hosted the Global Summit on Grass-roots Women's Leadership and Governance, where grass-roots women and partners gathered to share strategies, debate challenges and establish principles and proposals for collective actions. This event will feature the innovative outcomes of the Summit and review grass-roots women's bottom-up governance strategies for increasing their leadership and developing sustainable communities around the world.
