The Canadian Urban Institute, Canada's applied urban policy institute based in Toronto, marked the World Habitat Day 2009 by holding a special roundtable breakfast seminar on the theme of "Rivers in the City: Perspectives from Cuba and Around the World." The seminar was held in association with the Embassy of Cuba in Canada and was sponsored by the Canadian Water Treatment magazine. This event brought together urban and community development planners, architects, designers, academics, and environmentalists for an exchange of experiences and ideas on a theme that is common to many cities around the world – the role of rivers in the future of our urban regions.

The seminar featured a keynote presentation by Ken Greenberg, an award-winning architect and urban designer. He shared his experiences around waterfront rejuvenation - working on Toronto's Lower Don Lands, the Calgary Riverwalk and other river revitalization projects from across North America and Europe. Then, a delegation from the City of Bayamo, Cuba – a national historic site and one of the largest cities in the Oriente region – shared their work around creating an urban park along the banks of the Bayamo River. The team working on this project found creative ways with limited resources to clean up the river, upgrade the public realm and reconnect the historic city centre and neighbourhoods to the water's edge. With its commitment to civic engagement, the project won a 2008 UN-HABITAT best practice award. The presentations inspired a lively discussion from the audience, including on the issues of disaster planning and prevention, reforestation, community engagement in public space design, pollution prevention and control, use of green spaces, and new approaches to urban design.
