Habitat Professionals Roundtable
The Habitat Professionals Roundtable coordinated by the Habitat Professionals Forum (HPF) will bring together human settlements professionals to address the issue of professional practices’ steps towards bridging the urban divide. The world is experiencing a surge of urban growth on a scale never seen before. Better management of this growth is fundamental to international attempts to grapple with CO2 emissions, the consequences of climate change, and threats to food security through loss or farmland. Huge urban growth is inevitable, but the way we managed that growth is not. The skills of professionals matter more than ever – planners, architects, surveyors and engineers can make a difference. But they need to work together and as partners with governments, communities and UN-Habitat. The objective of this roundtable is to debate and highlight best professional practices and core principles for achieving urban sustainability. The Habitat Professionals roundtable will debate and present the 2010 Rio HPF Charter: Vision for our Future, Bridging Urban Gaps. "Bridging the Urban Transport Divide" A major challenge for 21st century cities is to meet the transport and mobility needs of their residents in an economically efficient, environmentally and socially sustainable manner. However, a complex set of financial, structural, environmental and political factors constrain the provision of adequate, efficient and safe transport infrastructure and services in urban areas. In turn, this has led to severe inequities and disadvantages in terms of access to transport infrastructure and services and therefore access to employment opportunities, housing and basic services, especially for the urban poor. This inequity represents ‘the urban transport divide’ and is the focus of the Urban Researchers Roundtable. The state of the current urban transport divide in both developing and developed countries and innovative practices and policies to bridge this gap will be discussed. Confirmed speakers: Professor Leila Christina Dias, Brazilian Association of Postgraduate Programmes and Research in Urban and Regional Planning and UFSC, Brazil; Professor Oyebanji Oyeyinka, Monitoring and Research Division, UN-HABITAT; Mr. Jerome Pourbaix, International Union of Public Transport (UITP); Professor Eduardo Vasconcellos, National Association of Public Transportation, Brazil; Mr. Michael Replogle, Institute for Transportation and Development Policy, USA; Professor Peter Wilkinson, University of Cape Town, South Africa; Ms. Maria Renny Herdanti, Institute for Transportation Studies, Indonesia; Mr. Xavier Godard, Advisor, Cooperation for Urban Mobility in the Developing World (CODATU); Professor Fabio Duarte, Catholic Pontifical University of Curitiba, Brazil Business Roundtable
The Business Roundtable aims to bring together leaders from the business and industry, policy experts, representatives of communities and other stakeholders working with the business sector committed to affordable solutions contributing to bridging the urban divide towards sustainable cities. Given the challenges of urban poverty and climate change, the private sector is not merely a part of the solution, but instead is a vital partner that must be engaged if the world’s cities are to achieve sustainability. The roundtable will build from urban sustainability issues have already been debated during the last World Urban Fora, as well as the last Habitat Business Forum. The objective is to debate and highlight best steps for improving the contribution to the urban poor through bottom-of-the-pyramid market approaches, innovation, good local governance, and agree on core business principles for sustainable urbanization. The Business Roundtable will use the recommendations of established UN-Habitat private sector working groups and their proposal of ‘Core business principles to corporate responsibility for sustainable urbanization’ to be debated and adopted during the meeting.
