The  International conference on the state of safety in world cities expects to develop a framework with concrete tools to hep cities address crime and insecurity.  In particular, the conference will seek to identify:

  • Citywide tools to facilitate data collection and analysis to support policy development and help monitor the impact of new urban security policies
  • Integrated polices and multi-sectoral approaches at city level
  • Partnerships for good governance and consensus building
  • Ways to measure and ensure sustainability of impacts of urban security strategies and policies

The conference will cover topics that examine safety in the context of the social, economic and infrastructural dimensions of cities such as:

  • Urban transformation initiatives and safety – integrating crime prevention in the implementation of heritage conservation, urban reclamation and redevelopment projects
  • Reclaiming public spaces for safe cities
  • Access to basic services and safety 
  • Poverty and urban development
  • Urban economy and safety – safety concerns of informal traders, market areas, industrial areas, business districts and other private sector entities
  • Residential neighbourhoods and safety – alternatives to vigilantism and gated communities in informal settlements and in housing estates
  • Recreational spaces and safety – public spaces as hubs for social reintegration: the role of sport, theatre, gardens and parks
  • Land tenure and safety – tenure conflicts and the role of security of tenure to promote safety
  • Schools and safety – safety issues for schools, universities and cities with large student communities
