Results achieved thus far

  • Internal review of ongoing activities in the water and sanitation sectors in Burkina Faso.
  • Revision of the existing policies and strategies toward the MDGs and ongoing PRSP process.
  • Identification and refinement of pilot projects to improve water supply and sanitation services in the neighbourhood of the three dams system which provide water to Ouagadougou City.
  • Assessment and definition of a general strategy for the organisation of small scale water vendors in Ouagadougou. This activity is performed closely with the Ouagadougou Municipality, Ministry for Agriculture, Hydraulic and halieutical resources and the Water and sanitation company (ONEA).
  • Final selection of a WDM pilot sites for the reduction of water consumption in seven institutions and six public buildings. The results of this assessment will be a basis to the development of a citywide Water Demand Management strategy.
  • Identification of local partners and development of the WAC programme implementation institutional framework.
  • Partnership development with local institutions and donors to develop synergies and collaboration framework. Main partners will be EU, DANIDA, SIDA and African Development Bank.
  • Refinement of the Human Values in Water, Sanitation and Hygiene Education in Schools (HVWSHE) action plan; training of a core team of trainers who will backstop the implementation of this component; development and finalisation of the implementation budget.
  • A WAC II programme document validation workshop (2-3 August 2005)
  • MOU signed between UN-HABITAT and government of Burkina Faso
  • Development of a cooperation agreement between Ministry of Basic Education and Literacy and UN-HABITAT for the implementation of VBWSHE.
  • Development of a cooperation agreement between the Water and Sanitation Company (ONEA – Office National pour l’Eau potable et l’Assainissement) for the implementation of innovative sanitation technologies. This pilot project is a follow-up of a training conducted in India in collaboration with Sulahb International. Three participants from Burkina Faso attended this training and have developed a pilot project which will be implemented by ONEA in public areas of Ouagadougou.
  • Development of a small bore community sewerage project in Somgande informal settlement in Ouagadougou. This project also includes developing a component for a microcredit facility with local micro finance institutions to facilitate access for the poor to the system. UN-HABITAT has entered into a Coopeartion Agreement with Enda Rup, an international NGO based in Dakar as the implementing partner for this project.
