The main source of water supply for Dire Dawa is ground water. The main problems for Dire Dawa city are ground water resource depletion, high pollution from domestic and industrial origins due to rapid infiltration conditions of the unsaturated zone of the sandy formation of the area and shallow ground water conditions and pathways created from poor design and construction, expansion of the city towards the ground water sources (another potential threat for pollution) and pipeline blockage and bursts due to encrustation as a result of high concentration of calcium bi-carbonate in the groundwater source.
Programme Goal and Objectives
The goal of the Dire DAWA WAC II programme is to contribute towards the improvement of the living conditions of the urban poor by providing a foundation to address some of the critical areas of the urban water and sanitation challenges through direct impact demonstration activities in parallel with focused capacity building interventions.
The following three objectives were identified to attain the goal for Dire Dawa: - To introduce pro-poor governance and follow-up investment and to provide efficient sanitation services to the urban poor
- To introduce and implement Water Demand Management (WDM) and Urban Catchment Management (UCM) strategies and programs
- To build the capacity of the stakeholders through water education program, advocacy, awareness raising and information exchange strategy.
