Many achievements have been made in Nanjing with regard to the provision of water and sanitation facilities. These include:
- Comprehensive improvement of Qinhuai River. Since 1985, the Nanjing municipal government has invested RMB 600 million to implement an integrated policy to improve draining in flood-prone areas and develop better sewage treatment. The water quality in Fuzimiao Section of Qinhuai River has subsequently been improved.
- Sewage treatment system in Suojin village. Construction of a sewage treatment system in Suojin Village started in 1983 so that now, in the newly built residential community, rain and sewage is separated. Under phase one, a sewage treatment plant with the capacity to treat 5,000 tons per day was constructed.
- Comprehensive improvement project on Xuanwu Lake – this project started in 1985 with the result that water quality of the lake has improved due to a reduction in nitrogen and phosphorus pollution from sewage and surface water. In 2002, Shangyuanmen treatment plant was rebuilt, and the new facility can treat 100,000 tons of water per day from Changjiang River to supply to a lake and two rivers in Nanjing. As a result, the water quality is improved.
- The three-stage integrated improvement project on Qinhuai River - this project has 11 sub-projects with investment of RMB 321 million. By the end of 2002, all the projects had been completed. The project focuses on flood prevention, drainage and waste reduction. All of the projects sub-components have effectively improved the conditions of the people living along the river as well as the natural environment.
- Project preparations for East City and Xianlin sewage treatment plants. The East City sewage treatment plant provides a treatment facility for an area of 41 square kilometers. The overall sewage treatment capacity is 200,000 tons per day. Xianlin sewage treatment plant will be built with treatment capacity of 5 tons per day which can be increased to 10 tons per day if needed. In stage one, about 25 kilometers of sewer will be built and three pumping stations will be upgraded. Comprehensive improvements will be made to the water recycling system, the Jiuxianghe artificial everglade ecosystem and the watercourse collection system.
Although many large capital investment projects have been successfully implemented, there are many new opportunities to support Nanjing Municipality to develop new initiatives to reduce water consumption and pollution and increase awareness and education about water issues.
