Date and Venue

The Expert group meeting and associated youth roundtable will take place in Nairobi on 21-25 June 2004. UN-HABITAT is providing conference facilities at Gigiri, Nairobi for the 3 days Expert Group Meeting.

Proposed Agenda

Day 1 – Preparatory Youth Roundtable (1 day)

The roundtable will be organized jointly by DESA's Programme on Youth and UN-HABITAT and will have discussion on the basis of papers presented by 2 or 3 experts. Approximately 10 to 12 youth participants, mainly from African countries, will take part in the roundtable. See the Briefing Note on Youth Roundtable for more information.

Day 2, 3 and 4 – Expert Group Meeting (3 days)

The Expert group meeting will be organized by DESA's focal point for YEN in conjunction with the ILO and the World Bank. 6-8 papers by experts will be presented to the meeting and participants will include 12 to 15 experts and 18 to 20 other representatives/observers from the host country and UN agencies in Nairobi . Topics include:

I. Dimensions of urban youth employment

II. National strategies and policies for urban youth employment

III. Challenges and innovative approaches

Day 5 – Follow-Up Youth Roundtable (1 day)

This roundtable will finalize its work with the involvement of youth participants. See the Briefing Note on Youth Roundtable for more information.

Participants

The youth roundtable will consist of 10-12 youth participants will be selected, mainly from Africa , with 2-3 youth representatives from other regions.

The expert group meeting will consist of:

  • 12-15 experts on youth employment and/or urbanization
  • representatives from ILO, the World Bank, and some UN agencies in Nairobi (UNDP, UNEP)
  •   representatives from lead countries for the YEN: Senegal , Namibia , Egypt , Sri Lanka , Indonesia , Hungary , Azerbaijan and Brazil
  • representatives from UNICEF's Child-Friendly Cities initiative or UNESCO's Growing up in Cities (If applicable)

Languages

The workshop will be conducted in English and French. Interpretation services are available at the conference venue.
