Information is one of the most valuable assets of the Urban Management Programme, especially through the lessons of experience being generated through city consultation activities. Sharing information and knowledge and building a strong knowledge management system for urban management remains central to the UMP. Regional information strategies are being implemented to support information and knowledge needs in the cities through Phase 3. Each strategy focuses on the needs of the region while at the same time fitting in with the overall vision and global strategy of the programme. In the Arab States, for example, a strong emphasis is placed on partnership with the media, resulting in broad coverage and awareness of UMP activities and issues in the region and sustained information dissemination and exchange. In Africa and the LAC region, under the Urbanet component of UMP, an extensive database highlighting positive examples of local management and models to solve urban problems has been developed. Urbanet also supports information dissemination for various city consultations. Information focal points in the anchor institutions in Africa are working on a consolidated knowledge management strategy. In Asia, the regional Website and CD-ROMs have been used to distribute information on specific city consultations. All regions are making more and more use of the electronic media to further spread the word on programme activities and as a complement to the information materials continuously under production. UMP Publications As a part of the overall Information Strategy, the UMP Core team and the Regional Offices produce a series of publications, regional newsletters, flyers, papers and other materials to support their work. Asia regional office Arab States regional office Latin America and the Caribbean regional office UMP and other Global Initiatives UMP activities support the UN-HABITAT Global Campaign for Good Urban Governance framework, advocating for good governance and inclusive, participatory decision-making processes, building capacity at the local and regional levels and synthesizing lessons learned and knowledge to contribute to the normative debate at the global level. Toolkits developed within the campaign framework with key inputs from the UMP will be used and promoted, and the anchor institution network will be actively involved in developing the normative framework and advocating for good urban governance. Collaborative mechanisms are now in place to strengthen the complementarity and synergy between UMP and various programmes of the UN system, such as The UMP is already undertaking City Development Strategies with the Cities Alliance in cities from each region and the number of cities participating will increase in Phase 4.
