UN-HABITAT delivered a seminar for 15 graduate students entitled "Disaster Management and Disaster Risk Reduction in Urban Areas" as part of the Erasmus Mundo-URBANO Masters in International Cooperation programme held at the International University of Catalunya in Barcelona, Spain.
The 12-hour seminar conducted over three days covered topics ranging from the context within which the humanitarian community functions, and within that how UN-HABITAT engages, to specific thematic and technical content related to housing, land and critical infrastructure in urban prevention and response.
The seminar ended with a working session during which teams faced a simulated response scenario - that is arriving in a disaster affected country, and within hours having to produce a one week; a two month and 12-month proposed action plans, the latter of which had to show clear linkages to longer term planning and programming.
Feedback from both students, and the Director of the course was positive and constructive, information that will be valuable in evolving global academic support programmes implemented by the Disaster Management Programme in the future. |
