Nairobi, 22 Feb 11

Dr. Clos (r) receives the credentials from Mr. Butiaha.

The new Permanent Representative of the Republic of Ukraine to UN-HABITAT, Mr. Volodymyr Butiaha, presented his credentials on Tuesday to the Executive Director, Dr. Joan Clos.

Recalling that Ukraine was the industrial hub of the former Soviet Union with a strong agricultural base, he called for the agency to establish a greater presence in Ukraine.

Ukraine, a country which still gives free apartments to those in need with fifty percent financing for other income groups, was prepared to help the agency in the area of housing and urban development.

Dr. Clos agreed that UN-HABITAT needed good projects and stronger relations with Ukraine. He noted that the country’s experience in urbanization can help the organization and also some African countries.

Both the Ukrainian Academy of Public Administration and various citizen initiatives have been using UN-HABITAT training materials in their training programmes.

Various organizations in Ukraine have celebrated the World Habitat Day by hosting international conferences. For instance, in 2009, World Habitat Day was marked by the State Committee of Ukraine for planning and architecture, together with the Municipal Management Centre by organizing a conference of international organizations, local authorities and public organizations in Ukraine.

Two officials from Ukraine have been nominated to take part in a training course on affordable housing in Chisinau, Moldova, in March 2011.
