Brussels, 7 Feb 11

Key high-level European officials joined the representatives of international institutions at the European Parliament in Brussels for wide ranging talks on urban matters and global urban development.

The meeting on 26 January, was co-hosted by the European Parliament, the European Commission and UN-HABITAT, with the support of the Hungarian Presidency of the European Union.

Delegates included the Vice-President of the European Parliament, Ms. Isabelle Durant; the European Parliament President of the Committee on Development, Ms. Eva Joly; the European Commissioner for Development, Mr. Andris Piebalgs; the President of the Committee of the Regions, Ms. Mercedes Bresso, and the Secretary-General of the Africa, Caribbean and Pacific Groups (ACP), Dr. Mohammed Ibn Chambas. They were joined by UN-HABITAT Executive Director, Dr. Joan Clos and his Deputy, Ms. Inga Klevby. This meeting gathered representatives of the European Union (EU) Member States, European institutions, Norway, Africa, the ACP Secretariat, UN organizations and Civil Society Organizations, including NGOs and Urban Professional Associations.
