UN-HABITAT’s Training and Capacity Building Branch (TCBB), supports the institutional setup and the establishment of training courses on sustainable urbanization of the IUTC. The IUTC aims to: •Enhance efficiencies in the use of local environmental resources, promote the sustainable use of global common resources (such as air, biodiversity, energy sources etc.), reduce environmental risks and strengthen the application of environmental conventions and agreements including the Climate Change Protocol. •Promote environmental restoration and eco-technology. •Promote more equitable access to resources and environmental services and subsequently reduce poverty. •Mobilize and strengthening local capacities to plan, co-ordinate, and manage sustainable local development in partnership, and •Harness the complementary strengths of UN-HABITAT, UNEP, and other partners in support of Agenda 21, and the HABITAT Agenda sustainable development commitments including improved local environmental governance.
Location: The training centre is based in Hongcheon Korea and targets local governments in Asia and the Pacific

Background

The International Urban Training Centre (IUTC) was established in January 2007 by the Province of Gangwon, Republic of Korea, to build the capacity of cities and towns nationally and in the Asian and Pacific region in support of the goal of sustainable urbanization. IUTC aims to bridge the knowledge gap between academia, local and central government in the field of sustainable urban development by facilitating communication, professional networking, learning and exchange of information. It will seek to enable dialogue between different stakeholders to create mutual trust and understanding in the realization of sustainable communities at the local, national and international levels.

Objectives

  • The International Urban Training Centre is operational
  • Curricula for two international courses, supporting training material and one toolkit on sustainable urban development are developed
    An Environmental Restoration and Eco-Technology Catalogue of Best Practices is developed
  • An Asian Expert and Training Network on sustainable urbanization is developed
