Blantyre, Malalwi, 9 Sept 10

An Information and Communications Technology project for young people has been officially launched in Blantyre City.

The project targets disadvantaged secondary school students in community, day secondary schools located in the slum settlements of Blantyre, and seeks to provide them with ICT knowledge and skills to prepare them for post secondary education and employment.

The project is a collaboration between UN-HABITAT (which is providing funding), Blantyre City Assembly (providing secure ICT training premises), South West Education Division and the NGO Concerned Youth Organisation (identifying and mobilizing beneficiary schools and students) and TEVETA supporting quality of training.

Some 12 schools without computer facilities are participating. Out of the Division's 108 schools only 10 offer computer classes or facilities.

The project was praised by all who spoke during the launch but they noted the need to scale it up to benefit more disadvantaged students who would otherwise not have the opportunity to acquire this knowledge and skills.
