UN-HABITAT’s Participatory Slum Upgrading Programme (PSUP) will host a Side Event at the United Nations Summit on the Millennium Development Goals to be held in New York from the 21- 22 September 2010.
The Side Event will highlight and raise the profile of the cooperation between UN-HABITAT, the EC and the ACP countries through the implementation of the Participatory Slum Upgrading Programme by outlining the “MDG success stories” in the fight against urban poverty. Further, it will allow the sharing and exchange of experiences, strategies and concrete solutions which contribute towards the achievement of the MDGs.
Launched in April 2008, the Participatory Slum Upgrading Programme aims to contribute towards urban poverty reduction and the implementation of the Millennium Development Goals, particularly Goal 7, Target 10, ““reduce by half the proportion of people without sustainable access to safe drinking water by 2015”, and Target 11, ““achieving significant improvement in the lives of at least 100 million slum dwellers until 2020”. The Programme is currently being implemented in the Africa, Caribbean and Pacific (ACP) States.
The United Nations Millennium Development Goals Summit will provide an excellent opportunity to enhance the ongoing tripartite partnership between the European Commission (EC), the ACP Group of States and UN-HABITAT in order to raise challenges and address common concerns in urban poverty reduction and sustainable urbanization in developing countries, especially in the ACP regions.
