Rapid motorization rates, rapidly worsening traffic congestion and thus decreasing mobility and increasing health problems entail significant technological, economical and policy challenges for African Cities. To respond to the current and future environmental, social and economic challenges associated with urban transport, the promotion of public transport and non-motorized transport as either a substitute, or a complementary mode for travel to the private car is essential. The Expert Group Meeting on Sustainable Mobility for African Cities will bring together National and Local Governments, key agencies, institutions and stakeholders involved in urban transport issues. It will provide an action-oriented forum to share experiences, and innovative solutions for addressing policy challenges related to sustainable urban transport systems. At the centre of the discussion will be the current state of nonmotorized transport infrastructure and public transport systems in West Africa.
The intention of this meeting, jointly organized by GTZ, UATP, the African Bicycle Network and UN-HABITAT is to discuss the way forward on promotion of non-motorized transport options and compact cities as complements to public transport investments towards sustainable urban mobility. You are invited to attend this meeting and make your contribution towards a more sustainable transport situation in African cities. |
