 The President of the 2010 Global Model United Nations General Assembly, Yue Qiushi, gave visitors to the UN pavilion in Shanghai a taste of how the global organization works when she presented a preview of an upcoming conference scheduled August 14-18 in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, intended to show young people how an international summit meeting works.
“I started by participating in a locally run University Model UN,” said Ms. Yue, who comes from China’s Harbin province. “And I was so inspired by the globally oriented atmosphere and the opportunity to learn about our world and the UN that I kept on coming back.
“Now I have had the humbling honour of being selected as President of the General Assembly by delegates from all over the world,” she said. “The Global Model UN is a great opportunity to make our voices heard as youth”.
Coordinated by the United Nations Department of Public Information (DPI), the conference will bring together the best university-level students from Model United Nations programmes around the world. They will discuss the theme, Towards an Alliance of Civilizations: Bridging Cultures to Achieve Peace and Development. Global Model United Nations 2010 will be a simulation of a summit meeting, giving delegates a forum to address issues at the highest level.
The Conference is designed to expand and deepen the Department's outreach to youth, a top priority for the United Nations, particularly with the International Year of Youth being launched on August 12.
