UN-HABITAT explores cooperation further with Chad and Cape Verde Bookmark and Share

UN-HABITAT is exploring new opportunities for further cooperation with Chad and Cape Verde following a visit to the agency by senior officials from both countries.

Background

UN-HABITAT said it would seek to strengthen ties with Chad and Cape Verde after a visit to the agency by Tahir Goni Brahima, Director State Housing Company, the Société de Promotion Foncière et Immobilière (SOPROFIM) in Chad, and Oumar Zepa, Director of Housing, Cape Verde .

They were accompanied by Janice Da Silva, UN-HABITAT Coordinator in Cape Verde and Bernard Zongo, UN-HABITAT Urban Planning Expert in Chad.

The team held talks with the Director of Regional Technical Cooperation Division, Mr. Daniel Biau and the Director of Regional Office for Africa and the Arab States, Mr. Alioune Badiane. The delegation also met senior officials of the various UN-HABITAT branches and global programmes for briefing on the on going programmes and projects and to explore new areas of further cooperation.

Speaking with Mr. Biau and Mr. Badiane, the visiting delegation commended UN-HABITAT on the progress it has made towards addressing numerous challenges facing cities and towns around the world including the improvement made on housing sector in Africa. They assured them of their countries support to UN-HABITAT in its efforts to implement the Habitat Agenda and encouraged the UN-HABITAT leadership to remain firm in this agenda.

On their part the UN-HABITAT directors assured the visiting delegates that UN-HABITAT will continue to work with the national governments to better the lives of the people living in cities across Africa and Arab States and anywhere in the world so long as those governments and local partners are willing to continue with this cooperation.

UN-HABITAT in partnership with the government of Chad is implementing a programme on the improvement in housing and urban development focussing on access to land and affordable housing and strengthening capacity of national and local government with funding coming from UNDP and the Chadian Government. In Cape Verde, UN-HABITAT is working with the Government within the "ONE-UN" framework to strengthen the capacity of the Ministry of Housing and Decentralization and Municipalities on the local economic development, safer cities, urban planning, and participatory slum upgrading.
