The Director General of the World Trade Organisation (WTO), Pascal Lamy, has said that his organisation is committed to working with all UN agencies to successfully achieve the Millennium Development Goals.
Speaking at the United Nations Pavilion at the Shanghai world Expo, Lamy said that a strong, harmonious and cooperative effort was needed if the international community were to face global challenges.
He continued: “The WTO, which sets the rules governing global trade, shares with the United Nations the vision of a peaceful and a prosperous world based on international cooperation and respect for the rule of law. Through our rules we contribute modestly to the architecture and the principles of global governance that are accepted and implemented in our world today”.
Marking the Agency’s honour day in China for the first time, the event was themed “Better Trade, Better City” to fit with the Expo’s overall theme, “Better City, Better Life”. A photography exhibition, “The role of trade in Cities” demonstrated the Agency’s work around the world. The Vice President of the Shanghai World Expo, Zhao Zhenyu, attended on behalf of the Chinese government.
Progress against the Millennium Development Goals will be examined a summit in New York September at which the WTO will present. “Although substantial efforts have been invested over the last 10 years, we are still a long way from our goal”, concluded Lamy. |
