Speakers at the International Youth Summit on Energy and Climate Change

More than 200 young people from around the world have met in China to debate climate change as a starting point for the development of a youth approach to a low-carbon future.

The second "International Youth Summit on Energy and Climate Change" (IYSECC) opened at the United Nations Pavilion of Shanghai World Expo with "Low-carbon Vision, Youth Sailing" as its theme. The participants will work with experts in related fields, officials and business people to discuss international climate change issues and concerns.

UN Commissioner General, Awni Behnam, UNEP Deputy Director of the Division of Regional Cooperation, Wang Zhijia, and Shanghai Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC) Vice Chairman, Zhou Hanmin, addressed the participants at the summit opening.
Zhijia said that following the climate conference in Copenhagen, the efforts of countries to cut emissions are still fruitful, and low-carbon economics is becoming of the world’s biggest opportunities and challenges. He stressed China's important role in the future of climate change, and praised the youth who were prepared to participate in the summit. "The world is ours, but the vision of a better world needs you!" he said.

IYSECC is an independent organization of youth and was hosted by Tsinghua University Student Green Association, Peking University Clean Development Mechanism and the Youth Climate Action Network (CYCAN) and supported by UNEP. Summit organizers hope through the international summit, to present the concerns of China's youths on global issues of energy and climate change.
