UN-HABITAT signs agreement with Nigeria Bookmark and Share

Nairobi, 11 May 10

Senator Akinlabi Olasunkanmi, Nigeria's Federal Minister for Youth Development and UN-HABITAT Executive Director Mrs. Anna Tibaijuka during the signing of the Memorandum of Understanding in Nairobi on Tuesday.

UN-HABITAT and the government of Nigeria on Tuesday signed a Memorandum of Understanding which will see the agency and the West African nation engage in collaborative activities targeting young people.

Mrs. Anna Tibaijuka, the UN-HABITAT Executive Director signed the agreement on behalf of the agency while Senator Akinlabi Olusunkanmi, the Federal Minister for Youth Development appended his signature on behalf of Nigeria.

The major outcome of this agreement will be the provision for a framework for collaborating on youth empowerment initiatives in Nigeria. “This partnership will specifically support the establishment of a Youth Center in Abuja,” Mrs. Tibaijuka said.

She thanked the National Youth Council of Nigeria in collaboration with Federal Ministry of Youth for donating five acres of land for the construction of the proposed Urban Youth Center in Abuja and applauded the young people of Nigeria for showing their personal commitment and contribution towards this effort.

Senator Olusunkanmi emphasized that the cooperation would enhance his country’s youth empowerment programmes and activities including the strengthening of the youth centres established by the government. He also mentioned that youth population was Nigeria’s most precious resource.
