Rizhao, 26 Apr 10

A Chinese city has pledged funding to help translate the UN-HABITAT website into Chinese.

Rizhao city, one of the 2009 Habitat Scroll of Honour winners, will provide USD30,000 every year for the next five years to support information and knowledge exchange on urban issues in the Chinese language.

Under an agreement signed by the Vice Mayor of Rizhao Municipal Government, Mr. Sun Yu, UN-HABITAT Executive Director, Mrs. Anna Tibaijuka, and Mr. Zheng Guangda, Deputy Director General of the Ministry of Housing and Urban Rural Development of the People’s Republic of China, the funding from the city of Rizhao will enable the Chinese speaking audience to benefit from policies, case studies, best practices, guidelines and other information on sustainable urban development on the agency’s website.

Mrs. Tibaijuka was received by top Shandong Provincial Government officials, led by Vice Governor Ms. Wang Suilian, and from Rizhao Municipal Government led by Mr. Yang Jun, Secretary of the Rizhao Municipal Committee and Chairman of the Standing Committee of Rizhao People’s Congress. They gave the Executive Director a tour of the city, highlighting the environmental, economic and social transformation that earned it the Scroll of Honour.

The officials also confirmed their participation at Mrs. Tibaijuka’s inaugural lecture on the recently launched World Urban Campaign. The lecture will be delivered at the United Nations pavilion 1 May on the opening day of the Shanghai World Expo 2010.
