Ulaanbaatar, 22 Apr 10

The announcement was made at a news conference by the Mayor of Ulaanbaatar, Mr. Munkhbayar Gombosuren, and the Vice Mayor, Mr. Munkhbaatar Begzjav. They were joined by the United Nations Resident Coordinator a.i., Ms. Rana Flowers, the First Secretary of the Embassy of Japan, Mr. Takahiro Ishizaki as well as representatives of Ministry of Road, Transport, Construction and Urban Development, the Japan International Cooperation Agency, the UN Development Programme, municipal chiefs and other officials.

The objective is to improve the quality of life of selected Ger areas through a participatory process whereby communities are involved in all stages of implementation.

The project will benefit 56,700 people from 12,185 households in five districts to help communities build public service centres, bath houses, kindergartens, school extensions, and water provision. The Mayor, stressing the Municipality’s support, cited the importance of improving basic urban services, while generating some employment opportunities at the same time. UN-HABITAT’s Chief Technical Advisor, Mr. Bijay Karmacharya, explained details of the project. It is being implemented under the auspices of the UN-HABITAT Regional Office for Asia and the Pacific in Fukuoka, headed by Mr. Toshi Noda, with technical support provided by Human Settlements Officer, Mr. Bharat Dahiya.
