The newly established Land Commission of Liberia agreed on Friday to sign an Agreement of Cooperation with UN-HABITAT for the joint implementation of land reform programme financed by the United Nations Peacebuilding Fund. For details, click here. The general mandate of the Land Commission of Liberia established in August 2009 is to propose, advocate and coordinate reforms in land policy and laws. The new programmes are aimed at promoting equitable and productive access to the nation’s land, security of tenure in land, and effective land administration and management. The purpose of this new programme is to support the establishment and initial functioning of the land commission by implementing a series of activities that make a direct contribution to the peace building process as part of a long term land reform programme. Within the framework of this project, a new vehicle was handed over by UN-HABITAT representative, Mr. Alain Grimard to the Chairman of the Land Commission, Dr. Othello Brandy. The United Nations Peacebuilding Fund was launched on 11 October 2006 in response to the growing global demand for sustained support to countries like Liberia which are emerging from conflict. The role of the Peacebuilding Fund is to establish a crucial bridge between conflict and recovery at a time when other funding mechanisms may not yet be available. In helping to address the most immediate out of the multiple challenges facing post-conflict countries, the Fund seeks to minimize the risk of a relapse into conflict.
