Tehran Municipality celebrates World Habitat Day Bookmark and Share

The Municipality of Tehran celebrated this year’s World Habitat Day by hosting a conference and specialized panels as well as a festival for children

The Conference and Specialized Panels focusing on “planning our urban future”was held on 5 October 2009 in Tehran and among the attendants were university professors, Tehran Municipality executive directors, environment officials from all 22 districts of Tehran, directors and deputies of civic architecture and urbanization departments, NGO activists in environment affairs, university students and others interested in environment and sustainable development issues.

The Secretary General’s message which was read by the UN Information Bureau deputy head, Mr. Rajayi Moqaddam. It was followed by a series of lectures on this year’s edition of World Habitat Day theme, “Planning Our Urban Future”. At the end of the lectures was the specialized panel of “Sustainable Urban Planning and Managing” on Tehran urban affairs and essentials in sustainable development as well as the possible upcoming barriers.

The closing program was the recitation of some poems by Mr. Amir-sadeqi, a culture activist and director of Tehran House of Ferdowsi. Observing all the programs from the very beginning to the end, Mr. Amir-sadeqi had intuitively composed a long verse account of all the goings on in the programs, including the attendants, the lecturers and even the late arrivals, right at the moment, which surprised everybody there. He also recited a couple of epic poems by Ferdowsi, which was received warmly by the audience.

The important role of children and young adults in urban management planning, was underscored when the Environment and Sustainable Development Office of Tehran Municipality held the two-day festival of ‘children of our city’ in February.
