Global Report on Urbanization and Health – Advisory Committee Meeting

A second meeting of the Advisory Committee on the Global Report on Urbanization and Health will be held at the UN-HABITAT Headquarters in Nairobi, Kenya 20–21 October 2009.

The joint UNHABITAT-WHO global report is being prepared for publication in 2010. Its main purpose is to:

• make the case for urgent action to reduce health inequities in cities;
• highlight the need to collaborate across multiple sectors and agencies;
• provide practical tools to enable cities and countries to assess and respond to urban health inequities.

The report will reach out across audiences, to municipal leaders, national ministries as well as health experts and practitioners working with urban development managers. The style of the report will be accessible to all decision–makers and urban actors from an array of disciplines, including those who do not have a health background.

At the Nairobi meeting participants will review the first draft of the report and provide feedback on the overall flow, relevance to intended target audience(s), and communication of key messages. The meeting will also agree on next steps towards developing the second draft of the report, due at the end of January 2010. And it will also deliberate on a global launch strategy to widely disseminate the report, including proposed activities.
