Hon. Sylvain Maleko

UN-HABITAT and the European Union have launched a new infrastructure development project in the Central African Republic as part of a programme aimed at strengthening the capacities of local authorities, the agency announced on Thursday.

The one-year project, funded to the tune of USD 1 million, is aimed at reigniting sustainable local economic development in 10 cities to improve housing deficiencies, the environment, infrastructure, basic social services and security in the local authorities.

“The timing of reengaging in the Central African Republic is right to explore way and means on how we can help develop the neglected infrastructure and housing sector,” Mr. Alioune Badiane, Director of UN-HABITAT's Regional Office for African and Arab States said at a ceremony in Bangui.

The ceremony was attended by Hon. Sylvain Maleko, Minister of State for Planning, Economy and International Cooperation, the Minster for Regional Development, Hon. Marie Reine Hassen. Others at the launch included European Union Ambassador, Mr. Jean-Claude Esmieu, UN Special Representative Mr Francois Fall, UNDP Representative Mr. Steven Ursina, UN Resident Coordinator Mr Maimoussa Abari, and Mr. Joseph Guiebo of UN-HABITAT.
