Nairobi, 21 Jan 09

The new Permanent Representative of the Palestine to UN-HABITAT, Dr. Zuhair Al-Shun, on Monday presented his credentials to the Executive Director, Mrs. Anna Tibaijuka.

During the occasion, Dr. Al-Shun praised UN-HABITAT and the larger United Nations system for their continued support to the Palestinian people. He noted that there is no other nation still under occupation except Palestine and lamented that the lack of interest by some nations to grant their request for self determination had forced the Palestinian people to resist the occupation.

The envoy who is also the Representative of the State of Palestine to the African Union is based in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.

Responding, Mrs. Tibaijuka assured Dr. Al-Shun of UN-HABITAT’s continued support for the Palestinian people in the agency’s areas of activity. “We will continue to raise funds,” she said, expressing  the hope that peace will return soon to Palestine so that UN-HABITAT can commence reconstruction work there.

Mrs. Tibaijuka noted that there is a Habitat Programme Manager (HPM) in Ramallah who coordinates the agency’s activities in the area. She also informed the envoy that the support of his predecessor made it possible for UN-HABIAT to work in Palestine and assured him that the agency was watching the situation in Palestine very closely with a view to taking appropriate intervention measures.
