Sustainable Cities Programme in Maharashtra, India

A Conference of 178 nations was organized by United Nations in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, in 1992 to discuss issues related to Environment and Development. The Sustainable Cities Programme (SCP) is one of the important outcomes of the conference declaration on Environment and Development. The Sustainable Cities Programme (SCP) is a joint UN-HABITAT/UNEP facility established to build capacities in urban environmental planning and management. The programme is directed towards urban local authorities and their partners in poorer countries that are experiencing unprecedented growth of their cities while possessing limited abilities to manage this growth. Currently the SCP is being implemented in over 30 countries worldwide. India is one of them.

Background
The EPM process was carried out in Phase I and Phase II of the programme in ten cities of Maharashtra.

Sustainable City Programme, Phase I, was initiated in Panvel and Virar, two cities from the Mumbai metropolitan Region in October 2003 Phase II of the programme was extended to eight more cities from different parts of Maharashtra in 2005. Phase II cities are Aurangabad, Jalna, Latur, Yavatmal, Warora, Rahuri, Ratnagiri and Ashta.

Activities
To hold City Consultations in each of the selected cities where interested citizens, organizations, institutions and various departments involved in city development will be invited to discuss problems faced by their city.
