A week-long workshop on film-making organized jointly by UN-HABITAT and the National Film Board of Canada for youth drawn from slum areas in Nairobi opened at the UN-HABITAT headquarters Monday.
The participants, some 15 youths drawn from three Nairobi slum-based youth film production groups, Hot Sun Foundation, Slum TV and Ghetto Film Club, are being introduced to the basics of film making and cinematography.
The workshop is part of an agreement between the National Fim Board and UN-HABITAT, which was signed at the third session of the World Urban Forum in Vancouver in 2006, to train emerging film makers in slums across the world.
The facilitators of the workshop, Mr. Joe MacDonald and Ms. Moira Simpson from the National Film Board of Canada said, “We are here to share experiences with the youth and help them improve their story telling and technical expertise. Thereafter we will assist them to produce three short films which will be shown at the fourth session of the World Urban Forum in Nanjing, China.”
Among the topics to be covered at the workshop will be fundamentals of cinematic storytelling, technical requirements for production and the relationship between plots and themes in film making.
The workshop will also provide an opportunity to educate the young filmmakers about the global slum challenge so that they can make films that show the problems and possibilities of urbanization both within Nairobi and across the world. |
