Nairobi, 26 Jun 08

On 27 April 2008, UN-HABITAT provided additional assistance to Boroma Municipality. This package was part of the broader Urban Development Programme for the Somali Region (SUDP). This latest material support from UN-HABITAT comprised of computers, a heavy-duty printer, a heavy-duty photocopier, and office furniture. UN-HABITAT has already funded the construction of a one-storey building for Boroma Local Council. This equipment helps to further streamline the day-to-day operations of Boroma Municipality and the delivery of social services in the town.

Speaking on behalf of Boroma Local Council, the Deputy Mayor of Boroma thanked UN-HABITAT and described the agency as a reliable partner. He listed the interventions that UN-HABITAT has jointly carried out with Boroma Municipality: the construction of Boroma City Hall, the rehabilitation and upgrading of three local markets, efforts to maximize municipal revenue through a Geographic Information System-based property survey, and the introduction of an automated financial management system, among others. The deputy mayor pledged that his institution would efficiently make use of the donated material.

UN-HABITAT Programme Officer Liibaan Hussein commended the positive relationship between the agency and Boroma Municipality. He emphasized the need to use the donated equipment in the best way possible to improve the service delivery of the municipality.
