For the first time, city profiles that include the new Rapid Urban Sector Profiling for Sustainability (RUSPS) themes: Basic Urban Services and Local Economic Development were published. Additionally, one of the profiles contains a seventh theme, Cultural Heritage, because of its high relevance for Rosetta. Further, for the first time, a RUSPS country team in close cooperation with UN-HABITAT headquarters printed their profiles in country, so that the following three Urban Sector Profiles are available as print-versions:
Tanta The city lies on the Cairo-Alexandria agricultural road, 110 km from Cairo and 120 km from Alexandria and accommodates 415,000 inhabitants. The profile urges to strengthen Tanta’s religious tourism potentials to better cope with the existing demands. Rosetta Rosetta, located 12 km from the mouth of the Rosetta branch of the Nile River is internationally known for the Rosetta stone, which led to the modern understanding of hieroglyphs. It is home to some 65,000 residents. The profile identifies Rosetta’s cultural heritage as vulnerable requiring protection and promotion in a sustainable way. Menouf Menouf is an agricultural city located on one of the Northern lakes in the mid-west of the governorate near the area of El-Sadat City and 86 km from Cairo accomodating 95,000 inhabitants. The accomplished profile dismantles the need of upgrading informal settlements by providing basic urban services such as sanitation, drinking water and electricity supply. |
