Nairobi, 13 Jun 07
Games, song and dance were the main fares dished out to residents of Kibera slums in Nairobi as UN-HABITAT took its Safer Spaces and Streets campaign to the area at the weekend.

The colourful event, hosted in collaboration with the Kilimanjaro Initiative saw UN-HABITAT launch the renovation of a sports field with a group of young cyclists who crossed Nairobi flying an anti-crime banner reading, ‘Youth for a Safer Nairobi’. The event was crowned by a football match and a performance by the Kenyan rapper Gidi Gidi, who is also a UN-HABITAT goodwill ambassador.

The Safer Spaces and Streets Campaign aims to engage city residents with the support of the private sector in improving public and recreational spaces in Nairobi. Founded in 2005, the Kilimanjaro Initiative has organized annual climbs of Africa’s highest mountain to raise awareness and funds in support of UN-HABITAT crime reduction projects in disadvantaged communities in Kenya and Tanzania.
