An American sorority has feted UN-HABITAT Executive Director Mrs. Anna Tibaijuka for her work especially in the fields involving children and gender concerns.

In its citation at an award ceremony on Friday, the Zeta Phi Beta Sorority said: “In recognition of outstanding leadership, profound commitment, dedication and concerns for children, and the advancement of women and gender issues, we honor and salute you for your untiring humanitarian work and accomplishments in developing Constituencies which afforded families a better livelihood.”

Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc., was founded on January 16, 1920 on the campus of Howard University in Washington, D.C. by five women who dared to depart from the traditional coalitions for Black women and sought to establish a new organization predicated on the precepts of scholarship, service, sisterhood, and Finer Womanhood.

The trail blazed by the Founders has been traversed by thousands of women dedicated to the emulation of the objectives and ideals of the Sorority. The Sorority was the first Greek-letter organization to charter a chapter in Africa; to form adult and youth auxiliary groups – the Amicae, Archonettes, Pearlettes and Amicettes; and to be constitutionally bound to a brother group, Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Incorporated.
