Nairobi, 11 May 07

UN-HABITAT recently completed a successful three-day system administration training for its staff and partners in Kenya as part of the launch of its distance learning programme.

The training which ran in the second week of May was conducted ahead of an on-line launch scheduled for later this month. A group of 20 participants comprising of UN-HABITAT and UN Office at Nairobi (UNON) staff from different divisions learnt how to manage e-courses in the UN-HABITAT Learning Management system (LMS), a technology platform that will be used to deliver e-learning courses globally.

Present at the training were members of the Association of Local Governments Authorities of Kenya (ALGAK) led by its Secretary-General, Mr. Hamisi Mboga, and the Mayor of Homa Bay town in Western Kenya, Dr. Peter Agulo.  Dr. Agulo expressed his appreciation of the opportunities provided by UN-HABITAT to ALGAK and his municipality through a number of UN-HABITAT programmes including development of the City Development Strategies and Water and Sanitation initiatives.

He said the LMS training had transformed him into an ‘e-mayor’ and demystified myths related to high technology. ALGAK now plans to have its members, composed of councilors, take the UN-HABITAT e-course of Elected Leadership.
