The Basic Urban Services (BUS) project is an initiative of the Sustainable Cities Programme. In Burkina Faso, the city of Bobo Dioulasso was selected to identify a neighbourhood where the municipality, supported by various local, national and international partners would develop a demonstration project.

Background and Objectives:

The Basic Urban Services (BUS) project is an initiative of the Sustainable Cities Programme. In Burkina Faso, the city of Bobo Dioulasso was selected to identify a neighbourhood where the municipality, supported by various local, national and international partners would develop a demonstration project. This project focuses on the involvement and ownership of the community in organizing, delivering and maintaining basic urban services related to water and sanitation. This project also serves to prepare a municipal strategy on basic urban services and will be replicated in other sectors of Bobo Dioulasso and other parts of Burkina Faso.

The objective of the programme is to assist local authorities in locating and implementing innovative and effective responses to problems related to the accessibility and improvement of basic urban services in the field of water and sanitation. To strengthen urban environmental planning and management of the municipality and its partners in order to replicate the project; and to contribute to poverty reduction by improving access to basic urban services for marginalized people.

Activities:  
Main activities include;

  • Sensitizing and mobilizing relevant stakeholders within the municipality of Bobo Dioulasso and within the demo area;
  • Building capacity at the community level in BUS through training and workshops;
  • Implementing the demo project in one section of Bobo Dioulasso to include waste collection, water tap connection, distribution of litter bins and cleaning sewage system;
  • Initializing educational campaigns;
  • Preparing municipal strategy on BUS;
  • Documenting the BUS process, the demo project and preparing the up scaling and replication.

Results:

  • A high participation rate of residents was created within the demonstration area;
  • Access to water and sanitation improved for a large number of people in the demonstration area;
  • Municipal strategy adopted on basic urban services;
  • Increased awareness of basic urban services within the municipality and the demonstration area.
