Nairobi, 30 Jan 07

The new permanent representatives of Burundi and Cyprus have presented their credentials to the UN-HABITAT Executive Director, Mrs. Anna Tibaijuka.

The presentation by the Burundian envoy was made on 26 January 2007 while that of Cyprus was on 29 January.

Receiving credentials from Mr. Jeremie Ngendakumana of Burundi, Mrs. Tibaijuka pledged her support and that of her organization for the Government and people of Burundi. While congratulating the new envoy on his appointment, Mrs. Tibaijuka also briefed him on the activities of UN-HABITAT both in Burundi and other parts of the world. The Executive Director also congratulated the Permanent Representative on the peace agreement in Burundi.

At the same time, the Executive Director received credentials from Mr. Vassos Chamberlen of Cyprus. Exchanging views with the envoy, the Executive Director expressed the hope that Mr. Chamberlen's appointment would lead to increased cooperation between UN-HABITAT and Cyprus.

The envoy also paid a courtesy call on the Deputy Executive Director, Ms. Inga Bjork-Klevby, who invited him to a meeting of new members of the Committee of Permanent Representatives in March 2007.
