UN-HABITAT Executive Director meets Nairobi slum residents Bookmark and Share

As part of peace building efforts following last year’s clashes in Nairobi’s Mathare slums, UN-HABITAT Executive Director Mrs. Anna Tibaijuka on Thursday held a meeting with the area’s residents to review the reconciliation progress.

At the meeting attended by people representing various interest groups in Mathare, Mrs. Tibaijuka expressed her satisfaction with the way reconciliation process was going on. Those at the meeting included tenants, landlords and others from the slums.

The meeting was briefed on the findings of a rapid assessment team that was set up immediately after the flare-up.

Following the clashes, UN-HABITAT donated $50,000 to the residents affected. In addition, the agency engaged the Youth Advocacy Programme, to assess the situation and help establish an assistance programme.
