UN-HABITAT is cooperating with the Association of Urban Management and Development Authorities (AMDA), New Delhi for organising a national seminar on “Urban Governance” at New Delhi from 24-25 November 2006.

The broad objective of the seminar is to examine the issue of urban governance from various perspectives and within the broad ambit of the recently launched Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM) in India. The JNNURM provides an opportunity for creation and improved delivery of urban services, especially water supply and sanitation which are its thrust areas. The tasks of urban governance include coping with the challenges of urbanisation, creation of employment opportunities, skills and technologies, universalising urban infrastructure and basic services especially water supply and sanitation, alleviating poverty, maintaining the rural-urban continuum in symbiotic manner, management of metropolitan cities and sustainable urban environmental management combined with participatory approaches in urban planning, decision-making and service delivery. The seminar seeks to address some of the critical issues relating to the above under five sub-themes which inter alia include water and sanitation.

The seminar brings together participants from municipalities and development authorities as well as policy makers, administrators, academicians and experts from national and international organisations including Mayors, Commissioners and other high officials from cities and towns of Madhya Pradesh, India where UN-HABITAT is directly working under WAC Programme. The seminar is also addressed among others by Mr. Jaipal Reddy, the Union Minister of Urban Development.
