The Fourth Global Forum on Reinventing Government in Mexico City November 3-7, gave heads of state and government, ministers and public servants from 15 countries an opportunity to exchange experiences and views on public sector reforms. UN-HABITAT representatives at the conference called for stronger collective effort towards meeting the reforms required for poverty alleviation and sustainable cities laid down in the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). The Government of Mexico and United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs (UN-DESA) organized this year’s event which drew over 5,000 delegates. UN-HABITAT sponsored and organized a session on the role of local authorities as frontline actors in attaining the MDGs and stressed that the delivery of basic public services is not only a technical issue, but also a governance issue. Participants demonstrated the importance of the goals in local and national development. They also shared experiences on good practices from Brazil, Canada, China, Chile, Mexico, Indonesia, and South Africa in the delivery of urban basic services, including housing. Lessons learned in terms of capacity building, urban governance and implications for policy and legislative reform were also shared. Final Declaration |
