Geneva, 9 Feb 04

UN-HABITAT and the United Nations Institute for Training and Research (UNITAR) have signed a memorandum of understanding to provide a cooperation framework in support of partnership commitments made at the World Summit on Sustainable Development in Johannesburg in 2002.

The memorandum was signed last week in Geneva by UN-HABITAT Executive Director, Mrs. Anna Tibaijuka, and her UNITAR counterpart, Mr. Marcel Boisard.

UN-HABITAT is mandated in the UN system to provide political leadership to support local authorities in a range of areas, including training and capacity building. UN-HABITAT will participate in training workshops organised by UNITAR in a number of cities including Curitiba, Kuala Lumpur and Ouagadougou. It will also offer its manuals and methodologies to the training centres of the Centre International de Formation des Autorités Locales (CIFAL). In return, UNITAR will put CIFAL collaborative centres at the disposal of UN-HABITAT programmes dealing with local governments.

Established in 1965, UNITAR is an autonomous training and research body within the UN system headquartered in Geneva.
