With nearly 1 billion people around the world eking out a living in urban slums, world leaders set a specific target in the Millennium Declaration aimed at alleviating their plight. UN-HABITAT has a Shelter Branch that deals specifically with Housing Policy, Housing Rights, Land and Tenure and Slums/Settlements Upgrading. It works closely with governments, municipalities and civil society organisations.
