Nairobi, 7 Dec 04

A group of analysts, statistical experts and urban planners from African, Latin American and Asian countries on Monday started a training workshop on data and indicators to monitor progress towards the Millennium Development Goals.

The week-long meeting is organised by UN-HABITAT, United Nations Statistics Division (UNSD) and the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA). Also taking part are experts from United Nations other agencies.

The workshop’s main objective is to strengthen national capacities to produce statistics, indicators and analyses for monitoring the MDGs and the Habitat Agenda at the national and city levels.

Among the areas covered are indicators for policy management and advocacy, its objectives and the need to improve the use of development data.

The course covers issues such as quality of data, disaggregation of data, effective communication of indicators and use of indicators in policy among others. Under monitoring MDGs, the participants will look into the purpose of reports, both as a process and a product, the number of reports as well as the MDG reporting development.
