The project aims at assisting the government of Burundi to improve the living condition of the poor in two secondary cities through the rehabilitation of social infrastructures, creation of job opportunities and development of an efficient micro credit system.

Background and objectives:
The project aims at assisting the government of Burundi to improve the living condition of the poor in two secondary cities through the rehabilitation of social infrastructures, creation of job opportunities and development of an efficient micro credit system. It will also assist the government and other municipalities in developing and implementing programmes to address urban poverty concern.

Highlights and Challenges:
The CTA has been recruited. The political and social instability in Burundi has delayed the implementation of the project activities. A launching meeting is planned to take place in September 2001. Recruitment of national staff is underway.
