Harare, 8 Jul 05

In a statement from the Harare where Mrs. Tibaijuka was winding up a two-week investigation of nationwide evictions from urban areas as the Special Envoy of UN Secretary-General, Kofi Annan, she said:

“The bombing of innocent people is an outrage against humanity and must be condemned. People from all over Africa can sympathize with the victims as they also suffered a similar incident when the US embassies in Dar es Salaam and Nairobi were bombed in 1998,” she said.

“As one of nine African Commissioners on the Blair Commission for Africa, we have worked to support Prime Minister Tony Blair in his attempt to put the plight of Africa on the agenda of the G8 in Scotland,” Mrs. Tibaijuka said. “However, with this cruel and callous attack, the perpetrators have helped distract the international community from the core business on Africa at the Summit. These terrorists are no friends of Africa.”
