The evaluation function in UN-Habitat contributes to improving delivery and results towards sustainable urban development by informing decision-making, supporting accountability and improving learning and knowledge in UN-Habitat and of its partners.

Evaluation in UN-Habitat is mandated by the Secretary-General's Bulletin "Regulations and Rules Governing Programme Planning, the Programme Aspects of the Budget, the Monitoring of Implementation and the Methods of Evaluation" (SGB/2000/8), commonly referred to as PPBME.

The Evaluation Unit is responsible for improving evaluation systems and coordinating evaluation activities of UN-Habitat. It develops policies and guidelines on evaluation; develops the biennial evaluation plan; conducts, manages and supports evaluations; maintains a tracking system to follow-up on strategic and mandatory evaluations; and contributes to enhancing knowledge management and capacity building, and UN system-wide collaboration on evaluation matters.
