Nairobi, 16 Oct 13

CDU Chief, Claudio Acioly and Manuel de la Iglesia-Caruncho, coordinator of AECID Montevideo

UN-Habitat, in partnership with the Spanish Agency for International Development Cooperation (AECID) has delivered important training for local government training institutions in the Latin America and the Caribbean region.  20 participants attended the event from municipal organizations, NGOs, universities and other institutions that provide training to local governments throughout the region.

Amongst the topics covered were Institutional Capacity Self-Assessment, Local Economic Development, Housing, Cities and Climate Change, and the use of networks. Participants engaged in lively debate on the strengths and needs in the region, encouraged by interactive presentations employing some of the latest training technologies, including the use of audience response systems (ARS). ARS, wireless keypads given to each participant, provide trainers with real time input from participants. This can help trainers assess the level of knowledge of their audience in order to tailor the training as much as possible. It also allows for creative, participatory training sessions.

Based on comments from participants at the event and their written evaluations the training was a success in providing the representatives of the various training institutions with valuable tools for institutional training, knew knowledge on substantive issues important to their city clients, as well as the basis of a network amongst the institutions. However, the real work is ongoing now that the participants have returned to their institutions and the ultimate success of the event will be judged by how they disseminate and implement what they have learned.

The training was delivered at the offices of AECID in Montevideo’s Old City.
Training institutions and similar organizations are key in developing the capacities of the world’s cities. Within its mandate to promote a sustainable urban development UN-Habitat is undertaking a three-year initiative to strengthen local government training institutions. This recent training is part of a series being delivered in Asia, Africa, and the Arab States, under the project “Enhancing the Contribution of Local Authorities and their Partners towards achieving the MDGs through Capacity Building of Local Government Training Institutes.” The project is funded by the United Nation’s Development Account.
