Tampa, 10 May 13

The Habitat Partner University Initiative-HPUI held its 2nd Global Meeting on May 10-12, 2013 at the University of South Florida's Patel College of Global Sustainability. Participants representing 40 universities from 23 countries gathered to discuss and agree on ways to strengthen institutional collaboration to address the challenges and opportunities of rapid urbanization and the cooperation with UN-Habitat. The coordinators of different thematic hubs, namely Urban Futures, Urban Governance, Informal Urbanism, Food Security, and Climate Change, presented the content and goals of their respective hubs which were officially launched during the Tampa meeting. Proposals to establish new hubs were also presented focusing on compact cities and urban densities, gender and port cities. The thematic hubs are established as a form of consortium comprised of different universities that agree to pursue collaborative work in research and education on one chosen thematic area. The university representatives engaged in a fruitful debate about the role of universities in the formulation of the new urban agenda and the process leading to the 2016 Habitat III conference which ended with the Tampa Declaration endorsed unanimously by all delegates, attached to this story.
